Ski-U-Mah! Finnegan’s Brews One (in time) for the Gophers (game)

Finnegan’s limited seasonal release Running with Axes is out just in time for this Saturday’s defense of Paul Bunyan’s Axe.

From the brewery:

“This weekend, the Minnesota Gophers will take on the Wisconsin Badgers in a fight to keep Paul Bunyan’s Axe right where it belongs. Football fans are certainly going to need a beer to calm the nerves and *fingers crossed* celebrate the win. That’s where FINNEGANS can help, with their “Running with Axes” beer, displaying the champion’s trophy in the hands of a Paul Bunyan-esque lumberjack. The IPA is brewed exclusively with Minnesota-grown Mighty Axe Hops, Maltwerks Malts grown in Detroit Lakes, MN, and is M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A strong with 6.8% ABV.”

The fetching plaid cans are available in stores now and will be available at TCF Bank Stadium for the game.

Finnegan’s Releases Hoppy Shepherd

Finnegan's

Jacquie Berglund founded Finnegan’s back in 2000 with the hopes of turning beer into food. Her organization donates 100% of profits to feed the hungry in the communities where their beer is sold. They’ve made a few different styles over the years (their beers are contract brewed at Summit) and they have all been very solid. The latest from Finnegan’s is a Session Ale called Hoppy Shepherd.

I was impressed with this addition to their lineup (although Dead Irish Poet is still my favorite) as it explores the interesting trend of hoppy session beers. I’m a sucker for these “hop forward” styles and this one lives up to that billing. Think lots of citrus with lightly toasted cracker from the malt. I’d suggest choosing this as you fire up the grill this spring and know that you’re not only feeding yourself, but also members of your community.

Speaking of community, Finnegan’s is partnering with local chefs this month in support of MN FoodShare’s Hunger Awareness Month. The theme….Food Fight. How it works is that chefs are asked to come up with a menu item using one of Finnegan’s beers and sell it at their restaurant for the month of March, and then donating a portion of that to profit. Voting will happen through the entire month with the winner receiving a free weekend at Chase on the Lake Resort. Check out the participants below.

• Bennett’s Chop and Railhouse – Chef Joe Bennett

• The Local – Chef Vincent Francoual

• Green Mill (Uptown, Lakeville, Eagan and Albert Lee)- Chefs Eric Heidelberger, Sammy Gonzalez, Danielle Puhle, Derek Oakland

• Le Town Talk Diner – Chef Ozzy Amelotti

• Pat’s Tap and the Red Stag- David Robinson (Pat’s Tap), Chefs Brian Krouch & Andrew Erenst (Red Stag)

• The Minneapolis Club – Chef Hakan Lundberg

• Jake O’Connors and O’Donovan’s- Chris Oxley

Cheers!

Finnegans Reverse Food Truck

FINNEGANS-RFT-Mock-UpMarch is Minnesota FoodShare Month, and our friends at Finnegans are celebrating this with their new “reverse food truck” with a kick-off at Kieran’s annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration on Saturday, March 15th. Irish and wanna-be Irish celebrators will be able to donate food and cash to help fight hunger. Finnegans has a goal of raising $5000 throughout March. How about having one less beer and donating some cash (and food) to a good cause?

Brew Love at Target Field

Brew Love is an annual beer tasting event at the Metropolitan Club at Target Field. This year’s event takes place on August 2nd. The goal of the event is to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, a dental clinic on wheels that delivers quality dental care directly to under-served children in the 14-county Twin Cities metropolitan area.

Brew Love participants sample a variety of regional, craft brews and enjoy food pairings. Summit, Granite City, Cold Spring, Schell’s, Lift Bridge, Mantorville, Finnegans and Crispin Cider have all been a part of this event in the past.

Tickets can be purchased here here – $25 for the beer tasting or $50 for the beer tasting coupled with food pairings. Event schedule forthcoming.

UPDATE: In addtition to the above mentioned breweries, others that will be participating are: Flat Earth, Fulton, Lucette and Surly.
As for the food, it will include: prosciutto wrapped melon, Bavarian pretzels with cheese, walleye cakes, bruschetta and more.
