Free Beer for Life?!

Sounds too good to be true but that is just one scenario if you become an investor in Smokehouse Brewpub. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jamie Robinson and Amy Johnson, two of the three owner/manager team of what they are hoping to become a successful restaurant/brewpub in the Standish neighborhood of south Minneapolis.

The Brewmaster and his Beer
Jamie started homebrewing in 2001, developing a quick passion for the art of brewing. During this past year he has been brewing at Town Hall Brewery. Jamie’s brewing philosophy is to use the characteristics of people’s “favorite beers” and then apply them to new styles. He wants to use the classic hops Centennial, Cascade, and Columbus in his brewing, loving the herbal quality these hops bring to beer.

Community-Supported Pub
While putting together a business plan the group decided to try an unconventional approach for financing a portion of the costs associated with opening a restaurant/brewpub. While the majority of their financing is coming from a combination of loans, their own personal investments, and support from the building owner, the partners have a desire for a “community-supported pub”. Think CSA but for beer instead of produce. There are multiple levels of support, starting with free beer for life with a $1000.00 investment, that can fit many small investors and community members. The partners plan on completing the community support portion of this project by the end of September. If you are interested in supporting a local brewpub act quickly as this opportunity will not be available for long.

Happy Belated Anniversary, Fitger’s

Yeah, so it’s already 10:30 on Thursday night, the night of the beer releases, but with any luck, they won’t drink it all tonight. Duluth, drink up!

We’re celebrating our 16th anniversary and our 3,000th batch of beer! Our anniversary is this Thursday, Sept 15, with the traditional yearly release of the highly prized Cherry Batch!

To celebrate our 3,000th batch of beer we present Batch 3,000!
CHERRY BATCH ANNIVERSARY 2011
ABV % 5.8
Color 12 srm
IBU 1
Hops: aged saaz

Cherry Batch, made with huge amounts of Door County, Wis. cherries, will make your taste buds flip out with its exploding flavors. People ask about it year-round and when it starts pouring it only lasts for a few days—tops. Master Brewer Dave Hoops said the Cherry Batch is crafted by making “a malty red ale, then we add 1,000 pounds of fresh Door County cherries. This beer is tart with a beautiful red color and a strong cherry aroma.”

BATCH 3000
ABV 6 %
Color 25 srm
IBU 26
Spices: Fresh Black Peppercorns
Ageing : Woodford Reserve Bourbon Barrel

This Belgian style Black Saison is brewed with pale malts, and chocolate malts to impart a dark color and cocoa-like flavor. Belgian yeasts create strong ester fruity notes and crushed black peppercorns are added to the brew during fermentation. “The resulting slight spiciness,” say Hoops, “balances the dark flavors perfectly. Post fermentation we moved this beer into bourbon barrels filled with fresh peppercorns.

“This special beer is our 3,000th batch since we began brewing in 1997.”

Harvest Ale at Great Waters

Need something to do this afternoon? Then maybe you should head over to Great Waters to check out a new beer they’re releasing. Harvest Ale is an American Wheat made with bitter orange and a hint of chamomille for aroma. A light, crisp and refreshing beer.

If you are a Great Waters MBA, it’ll be available for you starting at 11 am.
