Meet Senior Brewer John Hall from Goose Island

John J. Hall, son of founder John Hall and the Senior Brewer from Goose Island is making a few stops in the Twin Cities this week to chat about anything beer and anything Goose Island.

West: Head over to The  Four Firkins tonight (that’d be Thursday) between 4-6pm for a sampling with John from Goose Island.

We’ll have free samples of Matilda, Pere Jacques, Sofie, Demolition and Fleur for you to try.

East: Head over to Heritage Liquors on Friday from 5-7pm. (Check out Frank’s blog post.)

As homebrewers ourselves, we’re excited to be able to talk with the guy who makes Bourbon County Stout. We’ll also be sampling some Goose Island brews, hopefully including a few special ones.

…or you could do both… some of you, I suspect, will…

Clearance at Thomas Liquors, Fitty’s First Friday

Who’s drinking some big beers right now? Not me, that’s who. But if you have some room in your cellar, you should head to Thomas Liquors in St. Paul. They’re clearing space for all the new beer rolling in (and of course the hefes, saisons, helles and pilsners that we can’t get enough of when its 85 and sunny), and have dropped the prices on a couple goodies:

  • Founders KBS $13.99/4pk
  • Great Div. Hibernation Ale $7.99/6pk
  • Mad River Serious Madness $6.99/4pk
  • And I’m told there may be a few bottles of ’10 Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barley Wine laying around for cheap.

Don’t forget to head to the store tomorrow afternoon for Fitty’s First Friday. Odell’s will be sampled at the bar starting at 4pm.

Finally, if you haven’t bought your tickets for the Beer Dabbler on Sat., July17, pick  up one (or 10) while you’re there. Thomas is an official retailer for the event.

Firkin Video Contest

Might be time to bust out all that clay you have laying around from the 6th grade.

Want to win a $200 gift card for the Four Firkins? Like playing with video? Then this is for you…

After seeing how creative you all are with video commercials for Surly and other beer related businesses around town we thought it’d be fun to see what you could come up with for the Firkins.

Get together with a group of your friends and make a video “commercial” for The Four Firkins. Get as crazy as you like: animation, stop-action clay figures, kittens, real video, the possibilities are endless!

It should be no more than 2 minutes long but can be as short as 30 seconds if you like.

While filming inside the store is totally cool with us it would have to be done with a handheld camera only to avoid getting in the way of other people (I.E. no tripods or light umbrellas!)

Firkins employees can not be featured in the video, although animated likenesses of us might be fun..

Oh, one more thought: as much as we appreciate George Carlin style cursing, if we are going to display your video on our websites it might be best if there were no “F” bombs…

Submissions in by September 30th 2010. The winning video will be announced on October 17th and linked to our main Website, Cloud Profile and Face Book. Send you submissions or links to them to alvey@thefourfirkins.com

Grand prize: $200 gift card to the Four Firkins: That’s a lot of good beer!

Runner up prize: One bottle each of Surly Darkness (2009), Smoke, and Four.

We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

The Wine Thief is in the Ale Jail

The Wine Thief has gained a reputation in St. Paul (1787 St. Clair Ave) for offering affordable, quality wines…now they’re bringing that same philosophy to beer.

The Wine Thief will be closed next Monday, June 7, and Tuesday, June 8. But when our doors reopen on Wednesday, it will be to a bigger, expanded store.

Our newly expanded space is still part of the Wine Thief, but it’s a store-within-a-store, one that we’re fondly calling the Ale Jail. Yep. A beer specialty store is emerging and we couldn’t be more excited …

But what, pray tell, is in it for you? Well, quite a bit, we think. Here are some things you can look forward to:

  • A greatly expanded beer selection, focusing on unique and craft brews.
  • An awesome new cooler. We’re in love. Really in love. It’s beautiful.
  • A Build-Your-Own-Six-Pack station. And because we believe in a deal, when you do so, there’s no up-charge. Your per bottle cost is the same as in prepackaged 6-packs. You can also choose to buy single bottles as well, with a slight 10% up-charge.
  • A newly landscaped patio for you to rest your weary legs after walking or biking in the neighborhood. We can’t serve out there, but you can sip your water in a nice spot (and we have a doggie water dish, too!).
  • A new check out system. (Please be patient with us as we learn this newfangled computer system; we promise it will be worth it in the long run!)
  • New employees … get to know Will, Deanna, and Adam. They’re awesome, of course.
  • A new website. We can’t wait for this to launch. It’s super close, and you can bet you’ll hear from us when it’s live.

So while we’ll be closed for two days, we hope you’ll visit us soon after!

Peace,

Paul and Trina

Changes at Thomas, FFF Beer Tasting

St. Paul beer (and wine) haunt Thomas Liquors has made some improvements to their website, complete with section updates, events and tastings and recent arrivals. It’s still a work-in-progress, so check back often!

Thomas is also announcing Fitty’s First Fridays (Ha! You thought it was Three Floyds, didn’t you?!), when the first Friday of every month beer manager Joe “Fitty” Fitzpatrick takes over the tasting bar from 4-7pm for a night of craft brew. This week he’ll be cracking open some Unibroue beers, some of the best craft beers to come ooot of Canada, eh.
