Ryan Anderson (that's me!) is the editor & founder of MNBeer. Much has changed since the fall of 2005 and I'm proud to have been a part of it all. Sometime I'll tell you about my grand theory that links craft brewing to punk rock. Just ask.

Endion Station Public House Opens Friday

building-todayIf you should find yourself in Duluth on Friday at around 3pm, do yourself a favor and check out the latest project from our friends from Fitger’s Brewhouse, Endion Station Public House in Canal Park. This will be the first chance for the general public to check the place out. As we’ve mentioned before, Endion Station Public House will feature Duluth-Packed pulled meat sandwiches and kebabs and it will be the first Duluth cider house with multiple cider taps and a few signature Brewhouse beers as well as craft soda.

For their kick-off, a couple of my favorite morning radio folks will be broadcasting live – Steve Seel and Jill Riley from 89.3 The Current will be broadcasting from the patio.

The building (its name means my, your or his home in Ojibwe) was built as a train station in 1899 and moved to the Lakewalk in the 80s. Tony Dierckins, the publisher of local history site Zenith City Online, says the station is unique.

“We used to have dozens of railroad depots all over town,” Dierckins says. “It’s one of only two that are left.”

Check it out!

Back in October of 2012, we reported that the parent company of Fitger’s Brewhouse had won a bid to purchas the historic Endion Station train depot in Canal Park. Today we’re excited to share that the Endion Station Public House will open in July!

Endion Station Public House will feature Duluth-Packed pulled meat sandwiches and kebabs. Endion Station will be the first Duluth cider house with multiple cider tap lines as well as a few signature Fitger’s Brewhouse beers and a full bar.

Like Tycoons Alehouse and the Fitger’s building, the Endion Station is built in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. It’s made of Kettle River sandstone and even though it was a humble passenger depot, it was carefully designed to look its best.

I for one, can’t wait to check it out. Congrats gang!

Finnegans Extra Stout

image002 image001Cool news from the gang at Finnegans – this fall they’ll be rolling out a limited release Extra stout, Dead Irish Poet, in October. I love the name! This beer is designed for the cold months and will feature dark chocolate and stone fruit notes not unlike stouts found in the southern-most region of Ireland. Weighing in at 7% abv, this should warm the soul on those cool fall/winter days.

Finnegans will also be offering up a “Saintly Sampler” 12 pack featuring 6 Dead Irish Poet Extra Stouts,  3 Irish Amber Ales and 3 Blonde Ales.  Even cooler? distributors match Finnegans donations, doubling our giving during their November & December Drink Like You Care Campaign!

To make this all happen, Finnegans will be running a Kickstarter campaign starting August 1st. Their goal is to raise $30,000. Starting August 1st, you can throw down some cash for a good cause right here:  https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/FINNEGANS

Best local beer Kickstarter yet? I think so.

All Pints North!

all pints northHey. Hey you! Yeah, you. Come to Duluth with us. We’re going to have an excellent time and enjoy some great beers with great people, all with the largest of the Great Lakes in the background. Does that sound good to you?

Tickets are still available for next weekend’s All Pints North festival, brought to you by the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild. Over the last couple of years, this has become one of my favorite festivals and I’ve made it a point to spend the weekend in Duluth to take in the beer scene and the scenery. I love Duluth.

Whaddya’ say? Tons of breweries, great food, music, beer education, Duluth…

If you’re around on Friday evening, check out the Duluth debut of “Crafted to Last,” or just head out to Canal Park or Superior Street for lots of local beer and other refinements.

Bauhaus Brew Labs Opens Today

Another new kid on the block… Bauhaus Brew Labs is open to the public starting today! Welcome to the scene, guys!

I’m a fan of their aesthetic, from the logo to the space to the quirky (if not a little cheesy) videos. It fits with the first impression I have when I think of the word “Bauhaus” is German modernist design… or a band I just never liked. In any case, I think you’ll like THIS Bauhaus!

Eat Local, formerly the Twin Cities Originals, will open doors to the Taste of Eat Local event on Thursday, July 24, at TCF Bank Stadium for a culinary tour of favorite local dishes and new flavors from member restaurants.

The event offers 13 signature dishes from a variety of great local chefs, each perfectly paired with beer or wine. Now in its 9th year, event will feature a variety of sampling opportunities, including beer from Great Waters Brewing Company, wine from Chateau St. Michelle, cocktails from both Southern Wine and Prairie vodka and gin, and coffee from Morningstar Coffee.

“Not only can guests win multiple prizes, but each will be lead on a culinary journey through some of the most exceptional cuisine in the area,” said John Ryan, president of Eat Local and general manager of McCoy’s Public House. “The Taste event gives Eat Local member restaurants in the Twin Cities the platform to continue delivering the unique flavors and high-quality food we are proud of. It is a vibrant summer event all food-loving Minnesotans can enjoy.”

Attendees who fill out the Best in Show ballot will be entered in a drawing to win a $100 gift card to any Eat Local member restaurant or one of many gift baskets. Live entertainment will be provided by local band High & Mighty.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Eat Local’s charitable partner Memorial Blood Centers, who will offer complimentary blood-typing at the event and share information about its upcoming Pint for a Pint promotion that combines drinks and donations.

The event takes place from 6-9 p.m. in the DQ Club Room at TCF Bank Stadium. Tickets $40 and available here: click me.
