2009 Gitchee Gumee Brewfest

On Saturday, April 4th, 2009, the Superior Jaycees will be hosting the 12th annual Gitchee Gumee Brewfest.  Now now, keep down the yelling.  I know this isn’t a MN craft beer event in the strictest sense.  But c’mon.  It’s a stone’s throw from Duluth.  Plus many MN breweries attend the event.  In 2008 Schell’s, Flat Earth, Gluek, Lake Superior, Mantorville/St. Croix, Rock Bottom, Summit, and Surly…at least according to the site.  My actually memory of the 2008 event is, understandably, a bit fuzzy.  I seem to recall that not all of these folks were actually there.  Whatever.  It’s a beer event.  What more do you need to know?  Tickets can be purchased from several outlets in the Duluth/Superior area, otherwise you need to mail in your request.  My wife, I and our friends have not had a problem getting tickets in the past.

What’s New With the Brau Crew?

braubrothers.jpgHere’s an update of goings-on from Dustin Brau of Brau Bros. Brewing.

Greetings from the brewery in Lucan!

It’s been a terrific year, and it’s finishing with a bang.  First, sampler packs are now leaving the brewery.  They are 12 pack samplers with two bottles of 6 different beers.  They will be finding their way onto store shelves over the next week or two.  As always, if you’d like to request them at your favorite retailer, drop me an email and I will do my best to get them there.

We’re working on the next Single Batch Series Beer, and all I can say is… we’re finally going to appease the hopheads who have been emailing relentlessly wondering where our DIPA’s are.  I don’t know if I’d classify it as a DIPA, but it will be big and hoppy.  Look for it early 2009 with more details to follow.

Our swag department is undergoing and overhaul.  Look for new additions to our line of clothing as well as new glassware soon.  It will all be available online, however we encourage you to drive down (or up) to Lucan and visit us at the brewery.  Speaking of which, we are planning organized tours to begin early next year.  Included in the tour will be a walkthrough of the production plant, an oral history of the early years (2006, 2007), a hike through the hopyard and barleypatch (spring, summer, fall), and finally a sip or two of our beers.  Signup information will be available after Christmas.  As always, just give a call or shoot an email for groups or if you’ll be in town.

Take care,

Dustin

Beer and Elections!

Herkimer The Herkimer is offering a 2-for-1 special this Tuesday, 11/4, yet another  day that will live in infamy.  They’ll be running this special from noon until 2 A.M. while showing election coverage on the big screens.  So, stop by and have a few to soothe the pain of seeing your candidate lose…or win, for that matter.

Line Them Up & Knock Them Back – Brau Bros.

braubrothers.jpgBrau Brothers Brewing has announced their Autumn Brew Review line-up in their latest newsletter, which I’ve included for your consumption.  I’m excited about the line-up…especially the Fresh Hop.  Yay Beer!  By the way, I did cut a bit out of the newsletter to shorten in up.

Hey Everyone,
Just a quick note to update you on brewery happenings.

We are continuing to harvest hops, about 10-20 lbs every few days. We had really good success with Centennial, Willamette, Cascade, Nugget, and Sterling. We harvested some from each of the other 6 varieties in the hopyard, but only enough to play with. We also successfully tested a malting setup. I’d like to scale it up a bit to make it practical for us in larger volume.

All American With Their First Offering?!

All American Grill and BrewhouseI have not called to confirm this, but it looks like All American Grill and Brewhouse, Waverly, MN, finally has their first Ugly Tree Brewery offering on tap, Ugly Red (is Ugly Light on tap as well???), according to their website.  I’ll call to confirm this and to get an idea for the timing of new offerings in the next day or two.  We first posted about All American over a year ago and their opening was in November.  Early comments about their menu were generally positive.  Of course, now we can really discuss the one thing that matters (besides grilled meat, that is), beer.  I’ve been itching to head out there to visit the place, but ‘za and burgers alone are not enough to motivate me.  If anyone has actually had one of their beers and can confirm the existence, please let me know.  This will kind of be my “photo of Bigfoot stuffed in someone’s chest freezer” moment.
