Get…Abrasive.

Edit: Abrasive Ale is the newly-named 16 Grit.

From the Surly site (and BA, RB, Legal Beer, Beer News –man, how did we miss this?!):

Sure we’re abrasive. We were abrasive long before we were Surly. If you visit the brewery you can still see remnants of the industrial manufacturing factory Omar’s parents ran for 35 years within those same 4 walls. Bandsaw blades, grinding wheels, and sanding discs came long before ales and lagers. But let’s be honest, this is a lot more fun. Pale in color, this over-hopped, under-brewed Double IPA has almost twice the amount of hops & malt crammed in the can.

YEAST: English Ale

West Side in the house!

Ever have that feeling that something just isn’t right? Well I stopped in at the newly remodeled (well last August) Cherokee Tavern on Smith Ave just over the St. Paul border in W. St. Paul, expecting the dark, stuffy steak house I remember. Instead, what do I see? Bright windows, welcoming booths and 16 taps, not a bad one amongst them. And not only do they offer a great selection with several local or regional brews, but they are all under $6, even the Founders Breakfast Stout and Goose Island Matilda.

While they still don’t have a printed beer list and the wait-staff beer knowledge was limited (he described the Summit Scottish Ale as a red ale), the bar keep knew his stuff and was willing to talk shop. And they still have the signature steaks they were known for, as well as other quality, affordable fare.

I look forward to more from the Tavern!

Goose Island at the Village Pub

Goose Island is cranking out some pretty incredible beers these days, and what better way to try them than with some fine local cuisine?

Head over to the Village Pub in St Anthony Village on January 20th for a pretty sweet deal of a dinner. $40 gets you a four-course meal paired with:

  • Sofie, a Belgian-Style Saison (salad)
  • Matilda, a Belgian-Style Pale brewed with Brettanomyces (appetizer)
  • Honkers Ale, an English-Style Bitter (main course)
  • Bourbon County Stout 2009, an Imperial-Stout aged in bourbon barrels (dessert of course!)
