I find it interesting that everyone is talking about the price of hops, yet no one is talking about the price of malt. The hop market had a lot of things going against it this year. It will correct itself. High malt prices, however, are here to stay.
I’ve mentioned it with everyone I’ve talked to. It seems that malt only gets a sentence or two tops in most articles, if that.
malt just isn’t as sexy.
The price of malt is also an interesting story. My impression from talking to the experts was that the hops issue was somewhat unique because of the number of hops farmers exiting the business, while barley and wheat farmers are in it to stay.
The economic news gets even more interesting, as corn hit $5.12/bushel yesterday…
Perhaps feed barley farmers are in it to stay; malting barley is a different topic. With the current prices of corn, wheat, and feed barley, why would a farmer risk planting malting barley?
