Summit Unchained No. 12, 100% Organic Ale

Summit 100% Organic AleYesterday Summit Brewing Company formally announced the launch of the twelfth beer in their Unchained series, 100% Organic Ale. We first brought you news of this beer at the end of December when  the label was approved. What we missed, of course is that not only is this beer to be an organic beer, it’ll be Minnesota’s first 100% certified organic beer. This beer is brewer Gabe Smoley’s first Unchained creation and it will be available in draught and bottles the week of March 5.
Though organic beers hardly saturate the market, finding one or two isn’t difficult. In fact as far as we know, Flat Earth’s Angry Planet was (to our memory) Minnesota’s first packaged organic beer. As Gabe points out, though, “Most USDA certified organic beers on the market are about 95-99.9% organic because it is extremely difficult to find ingredients like organic yeast. This beer is made with 100% organic ingredients including malts, hops and yeast. I created my own certified organic yeast strain to do this, as there are virtually no organic strains available from laboratories.”

“This has been a challenge, but we enjoy those at Summit. Our company is full of innovators and I am excited to continue that tradition,” added Smoley. “The organic segment of the brewing industry is slowly growing and building steam. My hope is that by working with organic ingredients, we’ll learn some new, sustainable approaches to brewing and promote organic ingredients as a whole to the industry.”

Summit’s Damian McConn Promoted to Head Brewer

Very cool. Our friend and all-around good guy Damian McConn has been promoted to head brewer at Summit Brewing Co.! I’m always happy to see Damian’s smiling face whenever I run into him, but perhaps more importantly, I happen to really enjoy drinking his beers! McConn has been with Summit since 2003 and previous to that spent time as a head brewer at the sorely missed Sherlock’s Home in Minnetonka.  Congrats Damian!

Summit Unchained #11, Kentucky Common

Remember that time that I guessed Summit Unchained #11 might refer to Minnesota’s Old Highway 152 that stretched between Minneapolis and St. Cloud? As luck would have it, I was incorrect. Old 152 is also the official steam engine of the state of Kentucky.
Today Summit Brewing Co. officially announces the release of Old 152, the eleventh beer in its Unchained Series. Old 152 was created by brewer Eric Harper, who also created Unchained #4, Belgian Style Golden Ale. It will be available in draught and bottles the week of Oct. 22.
“This Unchained beer is based on Kentucky Common, a popular beer style in and around Louisville pre-prohibition,” said Harper. “The style disappeared after prohibition in favor of the lagers that we’re familiar with today. Old 152 will feature Cluster hops, one of the only hop varieties available in the U.S. in the late 1800s and early 1900s.”
“The beer pours a chestnut color with a slight haze and exhibits flavors of biscuit, toast and rye. Kentucky Common beers traditionally feature a “sour mash,” also used in the process of making another Kentucky staple: bourbon. Old 152 itself will not be sour but will feature crisp, caramel notes and a clean bitterness.”
To clarify, brewing this beer does employ a sour mash.
Old 152 Stats:
AVB: 5.8%
IBU: 55
Color: Chesnut
Hops: Cluster, Northern Brewer (Dry hopped: Cluster)
Malts/Grains: Pale Malt, Victory®, Crystal Medium, Rye Malt, Distillers Malt, White Wheat, Maize
Eric Harper will attend a series of special kick-off events for Old 152, including:
  • Oct. 18: Beer Dinner – Kincaid’s in St. Paul, 6:30 p.m.
