FULTON BEER: ONE STEP CLOSER TO BRINGING BREWING BACK TO MINNEAPOLIS
On August 18, 2010, Fulton Beer reached an important milestone in their quest to build the first packaging brewery in Minneapolis in nearly a decade. After searching for over six months, the company signed a lease for a building which they plan to be the home of Fulton Brewing for years to come.
Thanks to the Minneapolis City Council’s recent unanimous approval of the Brew Beer Here ordinance, packaging breweries in Minneapolis will now be allowed to sell growlers. The ability to sell growlers is key to the survival of small volume breweries, and Fulton hopes it will help them become part of a Minneapolis brewing renaissance.
Fulton is withholding details on the building location until the conclusion of a contest in which the first person to find the new brewery space will be rewarded with the very first growler produced in the brewery, and of course, the knowledge that they found it first. Instructions and clues to the contest are available at Fulton’s Facebook page.
The company has extensively researched brewing equipment, and plans to procure a 15 to 20 barrel brewhouse. The new brewery will produce kegs and growlers initially, with limited production 750 mL bottles planned for the future. Fulton will also offer frequent tours, tastings, and special events at the brewery.
About Fulton:
In June 2009, Fulton was incorporated with a threefold vision: 1) brewing extraordinary beer; 2) restoring the brewing scene in Minneapolis; and 3) building a new ethic for responsible business, embodied in Fulton’s unique Ful10 Fund, which will invest 10% of the company’s profits in a microloan fund to help other entrepreneurs launch their dream businesses.
Fulton’s first beer, Sweet Child of Vine, an IPA, launched in October 2009 at seven Twin Cities bars, and is now available at over 70 locations across the metro area. Fulton’s second year-round offering, The Lonely Blonde, debuted in June 2010 and is available at several dozen local establishments. The company currently brews for commercial sale at Sand Creek Brewing Company in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, and for fun in Peter’s garage in the Fulton neighborhood of Southwest Minneapolis.
Join Mark Stutrud at Schumachers in New Prague for a Viking size feast with a medieval menu.
And for all you football fans, you don’t have to choose between a beer dinner and the game. With the dinner at 6:00, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the food and drink. Schumachers will be showing Minnesota taking on New Orleans at 7:30.
Oktoberfest beers are already starting to show up and on September 13th Granite City will be releasing theirs during a Mug Club Tapping & Party. Open to all mug club members, there will be brats and kraut to accompany the brew.
The fifth beer in the Unchained Series will be from brewer Nate Siats and is indeed an Imperial Pumpkin Porter. Nate is a big fan of pumpkins and wants to do this up right, starting with where the pumpkins come from. The small, local, organic farm that is providing the pumpkins just so happens to be owned by Charles Jones, one of the strong fellas who work on our keg line! Nate’s desired flavor profile in his own words- A dark, chocolaty, full bodied beer with a slight bitter after taste. Evenly spiced with a hint of pumpkin, you would think you were sitting down for thanksgiving dessert. Perfect for a cool, fall afternoon.
We are shooting for the week of October 25 for a release date. Yes, later than most of the other pumpkin beers out there, but his won’t be the more common ale style that you usually see. He envisions this as a great big holiday beer to share with friends and family.

No doubt you’ve heard that Tallgrass arrived this week. Here’s a little more information from the gang at Capital Beverage:
We are excited to announce the arrival of Tallgrass Brewing Company to the Twin Cities on Monday August 16th. They will have three of their great craft beers available in the Twins Cities through the Original Gravity Distributors. www.twitter.com/Orig_Grav
Available brands will be: Tallgrass IPA, Buffalo Sweat and Oasis. The beers will be available on draught in bars and restaurants and in 4packs of 16oz cans at local liquor stores.
Tallgrass Brewing was founded by Jeff Gill after a lot of hard work and planning. Tallgrass brewed their first batch in August 2007. In the spring of 2010 Jeff converted all their bottles over to 16oz cans and hasn’t looked back. Cans are better for the beer and the environment! You can read the full story of the decision to make this change at www.tallgrassbeer.com/canifesto.html
The decision to found Tallgrass Brewing Company was made by Jeff Gill and his wife Tricia on April 8, 2006. Tricia had asked Jeff THAT question: “What do you want to do with the rest of your life?” Jeff had been thinking about that exact question quite a bit. “I want to start a microbrewery!” Jeff answered. He had been an avid homebrewer for six years and loved to brew beer that people enjoyed. At that point, he and Tricia made a commitment to start a new microbrewery in Kansas. It would mean moving from where they lived at the time, Jeff giving up his career as geologist, and Tricia changing jobs.
They chose Manhattan, KS for the location of the brewery, and chose Tallgrass for the name. They had always wanted to settle in this area to raise their family and live near the scenic Flint Hills and Tallgrass Prairie surrounding Manhattan. It just so happened that the water near Manhattan is an excellent choice for brewing beer, too!
For more information about the brewery and their beers visit www.tallgrassbeer.com.
If you don’t have plans for the weekend, enjoy competition, and think you’re pretty good at chucking a ball down a grass field then maybe you need to quit dragging your feet and get signed up for Town Hall’s annual bocce tournment taking place this weekend.
As of this morning there was still room for your team to play. Call Town Hall at 612-339-8696 for all the details.
Flat Earth’s Northwest Passage is a beer all of you hopheads have probably tried in the past and may have even taken home a growler of. Well, now you have another option that falls midway between a pint at the bar and a full growler in your fridge: bombers!
Tonight you can sample it, you know, just to make sure you really like it, and buy bombers of it at The Four Firkins .
Sorry we’re late… Craig from Groveland Tap dropped us a line to let everyone know that the president and founder of Tall Grass Brewing stopped in today to tap the first keg available in the state! Oasis, a double ESB. Assuming the keg wasn’t drained, you may want to go sample said beer. Cheers
