Burning Barn Release @Granite City

The next seasonal release for Granite City will be their Burning Barn Irish Red and they’ll be rolling it out on Sunday with a Mug Club Party.

As with all Mug Club Parties, there is no cover charge, it’s open to all Mug Club members (and one guest) and there will be a complimentary appetizer buffet featuring corned beef and cabbage, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad and rolls.

Not a member yet? Donate $5 to their Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of MN Fundraiser that day and a free membership is yours.

No, we’re not pandering for your votes (though we’ll take ‘em)… we’ve won two awards in our four year history and think it’s better to share, BUT we still think you should get out the vote and make sure your favorites are represented. Get out and vote for your favorite food and beer folks. Here are just some of the categories to attack… favorite local blog, favorite local website, best place for a first date, best State Fair food [I'm suggesting Summit on a stick], best Tweeter, best liquor store, best happy hour, best neighborhood bar and… uh, best Irish bar. For the latter, I’m suggesting you vote for your brewpub of choice. Cheers!

Underground Brewing

Wanna brew in a basement and sell it? Now you can, under legislation which passed the Minnesota House today. What originated as a bill for a constituent who was making and brewing tea in his basement, and ran into problems with inspections, allows a business to “manufacture, mix, or compound flavored beverage base or syrup; bottle or treat water; package carbonated or noncarbonated beverages; or bottle beer or other malt beverages.” Bring.com notes that “the ban on basement brewing is a holdover from the days when basements were often plagued with mildew problems.”

An amendment to significantly reduce the state fee on distillers was withdrawn with a promise to give the bill of the same purpose a hearing.

The brewing bill is working its way through the Senate committee process. Track it’s progress here.

[Note: As someone who spends hours a week on the legislative website, I can attest to the ease of tracking legislation, the depth of information and the ability to influence the outcome of said legislation.]
