Strib Article on Hop Shortage

In case you’re not a reader of the Star Tribune or in case you generally just like to look at the pictures and read the comics in the paper (like me), let me point you to an article in today’s Strib about the impact that the hop shortage is having on local brewers.  For anyone who has paid attention to this over the past months, there really isn’t anything new to report.  However, Chao Xiong, the reporter, does a good job in addressing the impact locally.

Support the “PedalPub Bill”

Al and Eric put it so well… While you’re at it, book a trip with the PedalPub!

The “PedalPub bill” is still alive and well!  It will amend the law to allow PedalPub passengers to drink beer and wine.  It has been rolled into the House “Omnibus Liquor Bill – HF3829″.  The Senate version of the bill, however, does not contain the PedalPub amendment, so whether it lives or dies depends on the House/Senate conference committee on the 2008 Minnesota Omnibus Liquor Bill.  We brought the PedalPub to the State Capitol recently to let Senators who will be sitting on that committee see the PedalPub, and we testified before their committee.  (Did you see us on the evening news??)

If you’d like to help, call or write your Minnesota Representative and Senators and ask them to please support this vital bill now before the House/Senate conference committee!

Mead!

Skypilot sent us a reminder that J. Bird Winery’s Mead Booth will be open for business on Saturdays in May. Though I’m far from an expert, I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying their mead and liked what I was drinking. Check them out…

VOTE… City Pages Best of the Twin Cities 2008

So you were one of the few Minnesotans who screwed up and missed the caucuses, eh? Fear not, friends, you can redeem yourselves, and you don’t even have to like Barack, Hillary or McCain! It’s time to vote in City Pages reader poll for 2008’s “Best of the Twin Cities.” We’d love it if you’d vote for us for “Best local blog” and/or “Best local website.” Work your favorite brewpub and beer bar in as well.

Beer in the local news

…and in the center of things, Flat Earth Brewing Co. – there are some great photos of Jeff and the brewery in the latest issue of Metro magazine along with a nice piece on the hop shortage. One piece on brewing wasn’t enough, so they asked me to give them a small brewpub roundup and there’s also a piece on the “Best Pint in Town” that puts Surly Bender and Furious up against Rogue’s Dead Guy and Shakespeare Stout and Bell’s Two-Hearted and Oberon.

Not to be outdone, MinnPost has an article about Flat Earth Brewing Co. in today’s issue.

And finally, the March issue of Mpls. St. Paul is sitting on my desk and the reader poll is in for Best Beer Selection.  I tend to disagree, but then again, one can’t expect Mpls. St. Paul readers to all be as well-versed on good beer as you folks are. In case you’re curious, the readers picked Old Chicago, Happy Gnome, William’s, Brit’s and Rock Bottom as having the best selection.
