Flat Earth Update: Element 115, Fitzgerald Theater, St. Paul Saints, Oh My!

Greetings Flat Earth Believers,

April has already gone over the hump. We’ve been busy here at the brewery getting ready for an open house at the end of May and keeping the beer flowing. We had a nice write up in the Cellars Wine and Spirits “Brews Tribune” circular. We are working on a second style that we hope to have out in a few weeks. We are not saying just yet what it is but it will be named “Element 115.” More on that later when we release the beer.

Our May calendar is filling up fast with events, check the calendar online for all the information. We may still squeak in an event before the end of April that we will announce through the email. We have partnered with “Taste the Arts” as the official beer sponsor for their upcoming event at the Fitzgerald Theater in Saint Paul. We have also partnered with the Saint Paul Saints baseball club to produce a special 15th anniversary beer for them, which will be exclusive to the ballpark for the run of the season.

Don’t forget the “official” beginning of summer, Grand Old Day (Sunday June 3rd), is just around the corner. Mark your calendar and get over to Grand Avenue in St. Paul for the parade, live music and the people watching.

We will be out and about a lot during May so we will see you soon and thanks for your continued support.

Cheers,

Jeff Williamson

Schell’s Update

Here’s a little update from Dave at Schell’s:

Zommerfest was *finally* packaged today.  Never underestimate the red-tape you need to go through with the federal government just because you decide to use honey in the recipe.

The honey itself came from Harris Honey Company in Madelia.  Harris is a great guy–65 years old, retired from beekeeping.  That means he only works about 70 hours a week during the season.  He only kept about 400 hives last year (he’s retired, after all!), and I was lucky enough to be able to hand-pick some honey for Zommerfest.  My past-life as a junior beekeeper in Fergus caused me to have a bit more than a pedestrian knowledge of honey, and I can tell you that his honey is excellent. I went with some basswood honey.  I’ve always been partial to basswood  for the minty character it has–just a bit more zip than clover.  I also enjoyed looking around the “plant” when I went down to pick it up.
Brought back some good memories from years ago.

Other than the Zommerfest, look for the Hefe in mid to late May.  We’ll be growing up the yeast in a couple of weeks and then do a full production batch around the end of April.  It’s a limited release, so make sure you get it while you can.

Cheers!

David Berg

You may recall that I predicted that the Zommerfest recipe would be revamped. I was way off on the specifics, but Zommerfest will be different this summer.
