August Schell – Episode 8 from Chris Jones on Vimeo.

August Schell Brewery was established in 1860 in New Ulm, MN and is the 2nd oldest family owned brewery in the United States. They have succeeded despite dramatic historical events and now are thriving with the craft beer boom. This is a short documentary on their story.

Autumn Brew Review Tickets

It's okay to tell a brewer that you don't care for his Oktoberfest, but please don't be a jerk (or hit people with growlers).

“I don’t like your Oktoberfest…” “Oh yeah?!”

…go on sale tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon. Now in its 15th year, Autumn Brew Review is one of Minnesota’s oldest and largest craft beer festivals. Tickets are $45 and with any luck, you can purchase them online here: http://www.tempotickets.com/abr.

The Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild-sponsored festival is one of my very favorite festivals and if past history is any indicator, you’ll want to be on your computer right at noon for a chance to grab tickets as everyone else seems to like it as well.

ABR runs from 1-5pm Saturday, September 19th at the Historic Grain Belt Brewery in Northeast Minneapolis and will feature more beer than you can possibly drink from more than 120 participating breweries. If that’s not enough for you, there will be live music, food vendors, beer education and more.

(Todd) The Axe Man Cometh

He doesn’t really look much like Lee Marvin, does he? In any case, next week our friends at Surly Brewing Company will be add a new canned beer to their lineup – Todd The Axe Man. Todd The Axe Man is a West Coast IPA brewed with Golden Promise malt and plenty of Citra and Mosaic hops. Dare I say it’s a tasty IPA? It has been a favorite in the Surly Beer Hall and now you’ll be able to find it in cans across Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Chicago starting next week.
Todd The Axe Man was first brewed as collaboration with Amager Brgyhus in Denmark in 2014. Amager chose the name in honor of Todd’s other gig as a (musical) axe-slinger. Perhaps Powermad rings a bell?
Surly will be celebrating the launch of Todd The Axe Man on Monday July 27 at Pat’s Tap in Minneapolis starting at 3pmhttp://surlybrewing.com/events/todd-the-axe-man-can-release-party-at-pats-tap/

All Pints North Saturday in Duluth

all pints north

STOP! RIGHT NOW.

Drop everything. Tickets for All Pints North are still available as I write this (Wednesday night, to be published Thursday) [Edit: still available at 11am Thursday]. So drop what you’re doing, grab a ticket and head to Duluth for the weekend. (Click here to buy tickets.)

Now in its 4th year, All Pints North returns to Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth with a huge array of craft beer, samples, education, live music and other fun.

Quite frankly, this is one of my very favorite festivals. Many years ago the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild created beer festivals that set the bar high for all other local festivals and All Pints North is no exception. You really can’t go wrong – the self-professed “Beer Capital of Minnesota” is indeed a great place to sip a beer sample or thirty while gazing at Lake Superior and watching as freighters pass.

I suggest you make a weekend of it. Duluth is beautiful… and ready for you. Hotels aren’t exactly cheap this time of the year, but I promise you’ll have a good time. Sadly I can’t make it this year.

Tickets are $40 in advanced and $50 day-of assuming they’re still available.
