Minnesota Made Teaser – August Schell Brewery

A friend and former coworker started Minnesota Made some time ago. Several months ago we were talking about topics and (obviously) breweries came up. Episode 8 of MNMade will feature August Schell Brewing Company. Check out the first teaser video. Full video to come.

Nice work Chris!

Congrats US Open Beer Champs

us-openThree Minnesota beers took home medals from the US Open Beer Championships this month. Two beers from August Schell Brewing Company and one from Badger Hill Brewing Company rose to the top of a field of nearly 4000 beers from from around the world.

Schell’s took Gold in the German Hefeweizen category as well as a Silver for Firebrick in the American Amber category. Badger Hill walked away with a Silver for their White IPA in the “Out of Bounds Pale” category.

Nice work folks!

Schell’s Starkeller Peach

Trip Fontaine, ‘The Virgin Suicides” – “Peach schnapps. Babes love it.”

Peach is one of those flavors we sometimes associate with sticky sweet things like wine coolers and the aforementioned schnapps. This, my friends, is not cut from that mold. As described, Starkeller peach is hazy, golden and full of peach aroma. You’ll find no candy-sticky-sweetness here. Instead you’ll probably catch the traditional Berliner Weisse tartness with just a bit of sweetness and… get this… peach. Seek this one out!

“It’s a beauty Clark.” Nice work @schellsbeer.

Schell’s Stag Series No. 9

Schells_Stag9_LageringCavesThe 9th beer in Schell’s Stag Series, is a nod to the 155 year old company’s 19th century brewing traditions. The limited edition offering is a dark lager aged in American whiskey barrels and stored in the brewery’s original lagering caves below the brewery. The lagering caves date back to the 1860s, an era that predated electrical refrigeration.

I plan to crack one of these beers open later today, but I’m told that the veer is extremely dark and features notes of roasted malt, dark chocolate, toffee, car and  vanilla. Barring blueberry Grain Belt, Schell’s never fails me. 🙂

It’s great to see the brewery embracing tradition and history and reshaping it to suit today’s beer nerds. I love the fact that Schell’s has chosen to take advantage of their unique and historic space. The brewery has plans to continue to use the historic lagering caves as a laboratory for traditional brewing techniques to create unique new beers. I can’t wait to see more!

Northern Lights Rare Beer Festival Saturday

nlrbf-2015_slide-1As of last night, tickets were still available for the Northern Lights Rare Beer Festival. And though the ticket price is decidedly steep, this is a festival that should make every beer nerd get a little giddy. For the uninitiated, this festival features rare, vintage and special one-off beers from 30 select craft breweries from across the country, including 10 form Minnesota. Suffice to say that this event includes food, entertainment and more.

Five beers I’ll really f&#@ing miss because I’m working Saturday:

  • Schell’s 2013 Barrel Aged Snowstorm With Brett
  • Bent Paddle Double Shot Double Black
  • Fitger’s Brewhouse Woodford 1100 Wheatwine
  • Town Hall Nitro Tennessee Dessert
  • Steel Toe Brewing Barrel of the Blood
