I first heard about this project quite a while ago and a glad to see that things appear to be coming together for Lift Bridge Brewery in Stillwater.
Their goals seem modest and achievable:
At this time, we want to release a few brews into the market to share with a small amount of consumers our goals and efforts. We hope to do this by Fall of 2008. If we are greeted with support from you, we will continue to increase production, augment product lines, and expand facility capabilities. We want to give this City, State and Region something to be proud of and to call our own. We hope that you will join us on this quest!
As always, we wish them the very best of luck!

Ooh! Another 150th Anniversary Draft Series release from Schell’s this weekend. It is a Munich Dunkel based on a recipe from 1867. The beer is a deep copper color with a reddish tint. Medium bodied, rich and malty, with hints of vanilla and chocolate. The beer is in honor of George Marti, who was the 3rd president of Schell’s (1911-1934), and was born on May 4th, 1856. They will be kicking off the celebrations by hosting a release party at the Side Street Pub in Fargo, Friday, May 2nd. They’ll be hosting many more events - visit their website for more information.
Thanks Jace!

Have I mentioned this yet? Perhaps not. In any case, Schell’s and Rapala have teamed up to co-brand a beer for the fishing opener, Lakemaid Beer. Here’s a piece about the beer in the New Ulm Journal. Check out the Lakemaid website as well. Definitely a bit campy, but funny as well.
“Half woman and half walleye, every sportsman’s dream come true…”
If that’s not enough for you, you can meet the 12 lakemaids, like Miss Northern, Miss Sunfish, etc.

Huh? The Ugly Mug? Wha? No, it’s not that coffee house in Farmington… The Ugly Mug is the bar formerly known as Harvey’s. They’ll be closed this week for a remodel and will reopen on Friday as The Ugly Mug. Half price pints from 4-7pm and free Schell’s from 7-9. It’s listed as Schell’s Amber on BA, but last I checked,Schell’s didn’t have a beer with said name.
Mark your calendars for May 1st at 5:00 pm for the release of Flat Earth’s Black Helicopter at The Ugly Mug as well. Black Helicopter is a coffee stout. I’m hoping that Jeff brings some to Arborfest on Friday. Could I be so lucky?
A description of the beer…
Black Helicopter is a coffee oatmeal stout made with locally roasted Columbia coffee beans from Paradise roasters in Ramsey, MN. What makes this coffee beer different you ask? This is the first beer of its kind made with coffee brewed on a Clover machine, which uses a unique mechanism for extracting the subtle and complex flavors of a coffee bean. Don’t miss this chance to taste this one of a kind brew.
I can’t help but think of Kopplin’s when I think of Clover machines. Andrew’s coffee is top notch. I think this beer will be gooooood…

Tours: reservations are now available for for May tours. However, the fine folks at Surly have decided to shake things up a bit… like I mentioned, they’re taking reservations… in fact you’ll need one… and the only way you’ll get one is by making a reservation online… make one here! Secondly, tours will take place on Friday’s from 6-8pm. Sounds like fun!
Tanks: they’re here. Witn any luck, by the time you read this, all six will be in the building. More beer!

On April 17th, Summit Brewing Company will start accepting entries for the first ever Summit Beer Movie Contest. The contest asks Minnesotans to make a short film, 5 minutes or less, that includes a Summit beer product placement. Since the brewery’s start back in 1986, Summit has supported the vibrant creative community of Minnesota through sponsorships and donations. Now is the chance for that creativity to converge with the art of craft beer in the form of a Summit beer movie.
“We want to see the creativity that our beer drinkers have hidden within them. This is not just a call for a beer commercial-we really want to see what people can come up with, whether they be a Summit beer drinker professing their love or a budding filmmaker with a story to tell,” said Mark Stutrud, CEO and founder of Summit Brewing Company.
The beer movie contest is part of Summit’s newest website launched this past summer -the interactive, video-driven, www.thesocialelement.com. This supplemental website was developed to tell the stories of both Summit drinkers and the brewery itself. With videos ranging from Nordic battle reenactors, to free runners, to Lake Superior surfers, and a weekly blog from Summit employees, the website explores what brings people together in an entertaining, visual format.
All films and entrants from the beer movie contest are eligible for placement on www.thesocialelement.com as well as attendance to the brewery screening party, with the top three films being awarded prizes. A jury of Summit employees, Paul Creager of the Square Lake Film & Music Festival, and Chris Pennington of the 10-Second Film Festival, will judge all submissions. The first place winner will receive $1000 cash, 12 cases of Summit beer, and a private party at the brewery. Second place receives $500 cash, 6 cases of Summit beer, and $50 in Summit merchandise. Third place receives $250 cash, 3 cases of beer, and $25 in Summit merchandise. Winning films will also be shown at the Square Lake Film & Music Festival http://www.solsticefestival.org/ on August 16. The contest runs April 21-May 27, with winners to be announced on or before June 9. Further contest guidelines can be found at www.thesocialelement.com.
So get out your video cameras, your creativity, your favorite Summit
beer, and make a Summit Beer Movie!

Below is a brief update (links removed) found on the Brau Bros. website (and no, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check the site out yourself). Lucan (pronounced “loo-can” - they notice if you pronounce it wrong apparently : ) ) is a bit off the beaten path for many of us, but they make it up to the Cities for tastings periodically. There will be Brau Bros. tastings at Wine Street Spirits in Bloomington and Blue Max in Burnsville this Sat., 4/12 Check out Brau Bros. schedule of events for more details.

This Friday we will be tapping the first ever cask-conditioned ale from Brau Bros! Our very own local pub, the BrauHaus will host the event. At about 6:30 pm we will start serving a dry-hopped firkin of Brau Pale Ale – I’ll be pouring the pints. I believe pints are only $2. I know the BrauHaus is looking to make cask beer a regular on “Firkin Fridays”. Beth, thanks for the heads-up on a couple blog entries mentioning Brau Bros, here: and here:.It’s always great to hear from people who pronounce “Lucan” correctly on the first try.
Take Care,
Dustin
