2009 Gitchee Gumee Brewfest | MNBeer – Beer from the Twin Cities, Minnesota, Minneapolis, St. Paul and beyond

2009 Gitchee Gumee Brewfest

April 4, 2009
4:00 pmto8:00 pm

On Saturday, April 4th, 2009, the Superior Jaycees will be hosting the 12th annual Gitchee Gumee Brewfest.  Now now, keep down the yelling.  I know this isn’t a MN craft beer event in the strictest sense.  But c’mon.  It’s a stone’s throw from Duluth.  Plus many MN breweries attend the event.  In 2008 Schell’s, Flat Earth, Gluek, Lake Superior, Mantorville/St. Croix, Rock Bottom, Summit, and Surly…at least according to the site.  My actually memory of the 2008 event is, understandably, a bit fuzzy.  I seem to recall that not all of these folks were actually there.  Whatever.  It’s a beer event.  What more do you need to know?  Tickets can be purchased from several outlets in the Duluth/Superior area, otherwise you need to mail in your request.  My wife, I and our friends have not had a problem getting tickets in the past.

Tickets are not hard to come by until the last 10 days or so of availablity. Usually sell about 1200 tickets. I used to go there when I lived in Duluth. 30 bucks all you can drink for 4 hours(including a drinking glass afterwards) or i think 80 for VIP to get in before everybody else and sample for 30 min prior to everyone else. Although that was about 2 years ago so pricing may have changed. I had a great time there everytime I went.

How much are tickets? I’m not seeing anything online…

$30 in the past for tickets. VIP is NOT worth it at all. $75 and all you get is a room away from everyone else with a couple beers (most breweries don’t bring kegs just for the VIPs). I’ve always mailed in for tickets and never had a problem getting them. As said in previous posts, this one is turning into a college drunk fest with kids throwing up in garbage cans less then 30 minutes into the fest and lots of “give me whatever”. I’ll give it a couple more years but some breweries have already pulled out (like Fitger’s).

My girlfriends and I (6 of us) made the trip to Brewfest last year from the cities and we had a great time! Tickets were $40. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in DT Duluth which has a shuttle service for free (no drinking and driving here.) Hotels are reasonably priced for this time of year and if you’re in the military or carry AAA, you’ll get a hefty discount. I didn’t notice any drunken college kids throwing up, just people enjoying the beer and having a great time with friends. We loved the variety of beer samples! The room can get cowded, but they do have some tables if you’re lucky to find a seat, otherwise you can climb into the bleachers for a break from the insanity. Bottom line – all ages can enjoy Brewfest! Why not start a tradition with your friends and Do Duluth.
