Eat it, Minneapolis! (That is, eat a Juicy Lucy and have a beer)
I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that St. Paul is THE beer city in Minnesota. Now, with the opening of yet another craft beer bar in the city to the east of the river, the jury is in. (FULL DISCLOSURE: I grew up in South Minneapolis, but it wasn’t until I graduated from college–and coincidentally turned 21–that I moved to St. Paul. Sorry City of the Lakes.)
But I digress.
You maybe saw the snipet in the Pioneer Press today about the Blue Door Pub opening at Selby and Fairview in the old Puerta Azul digs (yes, that’s “blue door” in Spanish). I fired off an email to Jeremy, inquiring about their plans and urging them to consider Minnesota beer in their line up. He responded that he and his business partner, having worked at the Groveland Tap, are planning “to specialize in local and regional craft beers as well as a wide array of tasty and interesting bottles. Beer events are a must here - we’ll have Firkins, rotating specials, and more.”
I can’t think of anything that goes better with a Juicy Lucy than a good Minnesota beer!

Yeah. I’m actually hoping that Uptown magically becomes the beer mecca of Minneapolis since it’s so close to home
Minneapolis is the best beer city. That and they have the RNC in a couple weeks! Couric and Paw-lenty both said so.
I think the bigger and more important controversy, instead of which city is a better beer city, is 1) who invented the Juicy Lucy (or Jucy Lucy) and 2) who’s is best?

I’ll also give the edge to MPLS. Beer bars I could argue either way but the brewpubs secure it for MPLS.

Ahem. Minneapolis has Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery. St. Paul does not have one of those. So there.
What no love for Great Waters? Mpls + St Paul = TC! As a whole the Twin Cities is a great place for beer. Matts has the best Jucy Lucy anywhere, ever. I suppose that could change, but they are going to be hard to top.

Minneapolis & St. Paul are both good beer towns.
Lets remember that in 1986 Summit brought craft brewing to the twin cities from University Ave in St Paul (just 2 miles from the Blue Door) at a time when “good” beer came from over seas. It was Summit that introduced both of these cities to the idea of having a premium draft on tap. Saint Paul embraced this local phenomenon earlier than its bigger twin. The efforts of Mark Stutrud and crew opened the door for Surly, Rush River, Flat Earth, the Bull Dog, the Gnome, Groveland Tap and, now, the Blue Door (walking distance from my front door, finally!) Saint Paul is the Beer City, kudos to Summit, see you at the Blue Door. Oh yeah, Matt’s invented the juicy Lucy and no one comes close.
