Hell on Tap
Linda over at Cafe 28 asked me to let you all know that they have added Surly Hell to their tap line up, joining Cynic and Furious.
Anyone else serving a little Hell yet?

We’ve got swag! You can buy glasses at Autumn Brew Review and Alvey at The Four Firkins has a case as well. Openers are free. The plan is to move on up to something fancier once these glasses go. Drink up!
For anyone not going to the Autumn Brew Review you might want to consider heading over to the Cellars in Eagan (2113 Cliff Road) for a beer tasting Saturday, September 27 2:00 - 5:00 pm. They have a very knowledgeable staff that does their research and is able to give first hand recommendations about their beers.
I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that St. Paul is THE beer city in Minnesota. Now, with the opening of yet another craft beer bar in the city to the east of the river, the jury is in. (FULL DISCLOSURE: I grew up in South Minneapolis, but it wasn’t until I graduated from college–and coincidentally turned 21–that I moved to St. Paul. Sorry City of the Lakes.)
But I digress.
You maybe saw the snipet in the Pioneer Press today about the Blue Door Pub opening at Selby and Fairview in the old Puerta Azul digs (yes, that’s “blue door” in Spanish). I fired off an email to Jeremy, inquiring about their plans and urging them to consider Minnesota beer in their line up. He responded that he and his business partner, having worked at the Groveland Tap, are planning “to specialize in local and regional craft beers as well as a wide array of tasty and interesting bottles. Beer events are a must here - we’ll have Firkins, rotating specials, and more.”
I can’t think of anything that goes better with a Juicy Lucy than a good Minnesota beer!
Join Jessie from Tyranena at Stub & Herb’s Wednesday, August 27 at 7:00 pm for $3.50 pints. Their IPA and Rocky’s Revenge are on tap regularly and for this special celebration they’ll also have Scurvy IPA and Devil Over a Barrel, from their Brewers Gone Wild! series.
According to the Pioneer Press, Herkimer has gotten a new brewer. Gustavo de Toledo of Paulaner Brauhaus beer in Munich has taken the reins and hopes to create some new varieties while retaining the classics.
Yes. If you’re riding the fence with regards to Autumn Brew Review, NOW is indeed the time to get tickets. Jeff sent me an e-mail today to inform me that they’re down to 11 tickets. That was at least an hour ago. Sold out. If you missed it, better luck next year…
Speaking of ABR, you’ll see a few new faces this year… Lift Bridge Brewery is planning on coming as are Vine Park and Furthermore, among others. As always, this event should be a good, good time. Don’t miss out!
This was taken almost two weeks ago. These feisty little Centennial hop cones are even bigger now. Can you smell ‘em?
Michael Agnew, owner of A Perfect Pint, hosted “Wheat Wars” last night at The Four Firkins. He led us in a head-to-head battle of wheats - one wit versus another (Unibroue’s Blanche de Chambly vs. Ommegang Witte), one American wheat versus another (Pyramid Crystal Wheat vs. Goose Island 312) and one German hefeweizen vs. another (Schneider Weisse vs. Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier) and then a final battle royale to choose the winner. It was an interesting way to facilitate discussion and get people to share what they were tasting in a particular beer. Obviously there were lots of differing opinions. In the end, I was 2 for 4 - the group chose Blanche de Chambly (I chose otherwise), Crystal Wheat (I chose otherwise), Weihenstephaner (Finally!) and then Weihenstephaner for the “best of show.”
Slackers take note: Jeff tells me that as of 4:00 pm today, there are only about 200 tickets left. Go get them!

Thanks to Corey for the scoop - on August 26th at 7:00 pm at the Bulldog (Lyndale), you can enjoy half price Duvel, Maredsous & Brewery Ommegang draft pours and bottles. Yum.
Oh man these look sweet! Stop in to the Muddy Pig to get your tickets!
Beer Lovers,
Tickets are now available for the seminars to be held in conjunction with The Muddy Pig’s Belgian Beer Festival.
Session 1: Friday, September 12 @ 5:00pm. Belgian Beer Styles
Session 2: Saturday, September 13 @ Noon. True Lambics
Session 3: Sunday, September 14 @ Noon. Belgian Beer Culture
Each seminar will be hosted by a Belgian beer authority, will last about 1 hour and will include samples. The cost is $20 per session or $50 for all three. Space is very limited and all sessions will likely sell out quickly.
The Pig will be open normal business hours throughout the weekend and we will be serving over 40 different Belgian and Belgian-style beers on draft.
So Surly has a new beer hitting the scene, Surly Hell, a Munich Helles. This is certainly old news to anyone that either regularly checks out the Brewer’s Blog over at Surly Brewing, or anyone who was at the Great Taste of the Midwest. Clearly, I’m not one of those.
From the Brewer’s Blog:
Walk with me in Hell
Aug 02, 2008
Ok not really a walk, but a drink of Surly Hell!
Sandy, Beaner and I brewed a single batch of a Munich Helles.
Basically a German style light lager….yea…yea …..Surly Light…get it?
Check it out at the Great Taste in Madison next weekend.
Draft only, so look for this beer at your favorite Surly draft bar in a couple/three weeks.
I know no one wants to think about winter and Christmas and all that rigmarole when summer is in full force but there are some times, like this one, when it just might benefit you or your craft beer drinking friends or family.
Vine Park is offering a Year of Beer Growler Punch card. For $100 one can purchase 12 growler fills for themselves or someone they love. So when you get around to thinking about gifts, keep this in mind for that special someone or let Santa know you’d be one happy camper if this was waiting for you.
I have not called to confirm this, but it looks like All American Grill and Brewhouse, Waverly, MN, finally has their first Ugly Tree Brewery offering on tap, Ugly Red (is Ugly Light on tap as well???), according to their website. I’ll call to confirm this and to get an idea for the timing of new offerings in the next day or two. We first posted about All American over a year ago and their opening was in November. Early comments about their menu were generally positive. Of course, now we can really discuss the one thing that matters (besides grilled meat, that is), beer. I’ve been itching to head out there to visit the place, but ‘za and burgers alone are not enough to motivate me. If anyone has actually had one of their beers and can confirm the existence, please let me know. This will kind of be my “photo of Bigfoot stuffed in someone’s chest freezer” moment.
